        Things to Do

Events Calendar:

  • February 6-8: The town of Dorado celebrates their annual Carnaval del Plata, or Silver Carnival, in typical 'Rican style (food, music, parades, and fun).
  • February 10-14: Think you're a daredevil? How would you stack up against these guys? Launching from Arecibo, Xtreme Divers host a freefall festival just in time for Valentine's Day.
  • February 10-16: The Ponce Carnival is Puerto Rico's answer to Mardi Gras, Rio'd Carnaval, and every other pre-Lent celebration. And if New Orleans has its beaded revelers and Rio its costumed dancers, Puerto Rico has its Vejigantes, elaborately masked figures representing local folkloric demons.
  • February 12-14: The town of Maricao, in the coffee-growing interior, appropriately holds its annual Coffee Harvest Festival, which includes arts and crafts, live folk music, food, and exhibitions related to the cultivating and harvesting of coffee.
  • February 14: Valentine's Day is quite popular on the island. Check my blogs in February for special deals and dinner offers at hotels and restaurants. Or you can head to Aguadilla, on the west coast of Puerto Rico, for their Festival Día del Amor, or "Festival of the Day of Love."
  • February 20-March 13: The internationally renowned Casals Festival has an impressive guest list this year, including violinist Midori, chamber music legend Menahem Pressler and Vladimir Feltsman, and world-famous soprano Ana María Martínez, to name just a few. Events will be held at the Luis A. Ferré Performing Arts Center in San Juan.
  • February 26-28: The town of Guayama in Porta Caribe holds its annual Feria Dulces Sueños, or "Sweet Dreams Fair," one of the town's biggest events. The highlight of the fair is the beautiful Paso Fino horse competition.
  • February 26-28: The small town of Guaynabo has an interesting carnival that it has held since 1976 in honor of Mabó, a local Taíno Indian chieftain.
  • February 28: Kicking off the last day of the year, the World's Best 10K Race has become the largest family sports event in Puerto Rico, drawing more than 10,000 people a year. The race starts from the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge in San Juan and includes a variety of prizes including a raffle for a new car.
  • Throughout February: Whale-watching season continues in the west coast of Puerto Rico, when humpback whales can be spotted off the coast. An excellent spot to see them is the observation park at the Rincón lighthouse.
  • Throughout February: DanzActiva and its director, Paulette Beauchamp, present the Cadencia Andaluza a presentation of the Tablao de Paulette. This music and dance marriage of Spain and Puerto Rico combines Flamenco singers and dancers with Puerto Rican troubadors and cuatro players. The show is held at the Cuartel de Ballajá, or historic barracks, in Old San Juan.
